Thank you all for a great day of Congress on Saturday! Seemed like the kids had a good time and we ran more or less on time thorughout the day.
A BIG thank you to you all -- I'm thinking virtually every coach was deputized at one point or another! A District Tournament just can't run without everyone pitching in when they can - so thank you for helping this thing run smoothly!
A few notes:
- Ballots have been sealed and LITERALLY NO ONE knows who won. And literally NO ONE CAN FIGURE IT OUT RIGHT NOW. Even though I can attest that the District Committee members are WAY too busy these weeks to be sifting through this stuff just for fun, we still want to show coaches and kids that we're serious. No District Committee member has access to the whole story - the Congress Ballots won't all come back together until Friday, March 10th. So if you're kids start talking about "I know Timmy Tim advanced because Coach Wunn told me..." you can smack that talk down right away.
- We will unseal the ballots during the NSDA Speech & Debate District on March 10th or 11th. My hope is that we can have the list of "Top 10" in each chamber by early Saturday morning. That won't tell us anything... due to double-qualifications, just because we have a winner in each house doesn't mean that they're qualifying in congress. If they qualify in something else, we move down to the next in line. Some years we go down to 5th or 6th in some chambers. So... If you're not at the Speech & Debate tournament on March 11th, make sure I have a phone number where I can call you if you have a student listed in the top 10. We won't know EXACT QUALIFIERS in Congress until usually an hour before awards (when the last debate or extemp rounds end), but we can at least make it so that IF your student is advancing they don't miss their time on the stage at awards!
Our RESOLUTION to be submitted to Nationals is "A Resolution to Reduce the US Committment to the War on Drugs" authored by Brentwood High School.
Our BILL to be submitted to Nationals is "A Bill to Reallocate 10% of Defense Funding to Subsidize Higher Education" authored by Clayton High School.
I will be in touch with both of these schools AFTER NSDA Districts is over to get legislation properly formatted for National submission. Of course, if anyone would like to check my numbers on this, I'm happy to go through it all with you AFTER NSDA Districts but well-before the submission deadline. Fair warning... It took about 90 minutes to get thorugh the ballot for BILLS and about 2 hours to get through resolutions... how much do you LOVE congress? :)
Thank you! The Districts Marathon is 1/3rd over!
