Yup -- it's time for Districts. Hard to believe we're just a few weeks a way.
Here's the current to do list:
First, please make sure that you're entering points for your students. For new coaches, remember that the points = degrees, and the number of degrees determine how many "slots" you have at NFL Congress Districts and NFL Speech & Debate Districts.
Second, Ed will need your congress legislation by February 1st. Please submit up to two pieces of legislation (preferably 1 bill and 1 resolution) in the proper format. You can find formatting instructions here.
Third, you'll want to review the judging obligation requirements and start recruiting judges. I've attached the requirements (updated from the one I sent in December to fix a few dates and Cara's last name) and the new judge form. The judge form was HEAVILY revised this year - it's now one form for both MSHSAA and NFL! The Committee is recommending that coaches do not count themselves into meeting their judging quota if at all possible. This will allow coaches to, you know, coach at the tournament!
Fourth, the District Tournament Operations Manual is a must read for all head coaches. I've attached it below. You can also find it and all of the other forms here. (Did you notice that www.nationalforensicleague.org has now become www.speechanddebate.org?)
We will be using Joy of Tournaments again this year (year 7, I believe). Joy generates most of the registration forms for you, so right now there's not really a need to print out the additional forms, just the manual. Speaking of which, the Joy websites for both Congress and Speech & Debate registration should go active on Friday. They will both have VERY helpful information for you!
Fifth, I've already contacted coaches that will fill specific roles during the tournament. However, I like to think of it only as "first position." I would really like to get to a place where the operations of this tournament are shared more equally among coaches - allowing all of us to 1) be a part of the inner workings of this tournament and learn how it operates, and 2) spend a bit more time with our students during what can be a very emotional weekend. Will it be perfect this year? No... but we'll work towards it.
Sixth, you'll want to check out www.eastmonfl.weebly.com - Omar and Cara developed a spreadsheet for each school currently affiliated with Eastern Missouri so coaches can track judges that may come in through Cara's direct contact emails that have been sent out already. The spreadsheets are really impressive!
More to come! Please let me know what questions you have.
